Meet Rattan 'Ray' Gupta
Rattan ‘Ray’ Gupta is the Chairman, C.E.O. and Founder of Sunray Group, one of Canada’s fastest-growing hospitality and development companies. Ray has built on his natural business acumen and entrepreneurial instincts to grow from modest beginnings to leading and directing a multi-faceted organization.
Ray has made a career by conducting stringent market studies and finding under-utilized, well-located assets with upside opportunities. This forward-thinking approach and working closely with some of the hotel industry’s top brands and professionals has allowed him to identify and profit from often overlooked opportunities – “We were not purchasing hotels based on the current yield or profitability; these were properties operating at huge losses, and with our strategic approach, we were able to turn them around, either by repositioning/rebranding them or by renovating. When most tell us ‘it cannot be done,’ we know we are on the right track.”
Ray’s keen business and interpersonal skills have enabled him to attract a core set of highly motivated and hugely experienced executive team members to drive the company forward and ensure its continued and sustained growth far into the future. As a further endorsement of his tremendous success, Ray was personally awarded the title “Male Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in 2017. Sunray was awarded the Pinnacle “Regional Company of the Year” in 2016 and the Pinnacle “National Company of the Year” in 2023. Additionally, Sunray received the prestigious Marriott 2022 Partnership Circle Award, highlighting their exceptional collaboration and performance within the hospitality industry. Sunray has built and maintained exceptional relationships with all the major brands in the hospitality industry, such as Marriott, Hilton, Best Western, IHG, and Choice.
Ray is committed to philanthropic causes that make a difference for his employees and communities. In 2016, Sunray donated to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Choice Foundation, Sleeping Children Around the World, Hindu Cultural Society, and Aga Khan Foundation. In 2017, Sunray Group started the Sunray Foundation in recognition of the need to lend a hand to employees in the hospitality industry. The foundation continues to fundraise to help those in need. Ray is also a co-founder and executive board member of Positive and Progressive Educational Support Canada, a charitable organization set up in early 2017 to provide funding for young girls’ education in rural communities in India. In 2023, Sunray donated to remove barriers to mental health care, significantly aiding the Scarborough Health Network Foundation in expanding its presence. The Ray Gupta and Family Mood and Anxiety Clinic is a key component of the new center.

Leamington, ON – The Sunray Group recently celebrated the grand opening of the Best Western Plus Leamington Hotel & Conference Centre. Guests enjoyed great food, wine, signature cocktails, live entertainment, candy station, tours and gifts! This hotel has been a prominent member of the area’s hotel industry, previously known as the Pelee Motor Inn. A $4.5 million transformation was completed a few months ago when it was re-branded as the Best Western Plus Leamington Hotel and Conference Centre. On the exterior, the façade of the building was raised 3.5 feet, stucco, stone and paint were fully refreshed, new lighting and landscaping were installed and the parking lot asphalt was redone and sealed. 100,000 sq. ft. of drywall was used to enclose what were exterior access rooms on the north side of the building. An electric car charging station was installed.

Travellers on Highway 401 driving through Toronto have likely noticed the Radisson Toronto East Hotel at the Victoria Park exit. It’s a distinctive building with three prongs radiating out from a central core. It was once a Viscount and a Travelodge, but has flown the Radisson flag for a number of years. This hotel is the latest aquisition by Sunray Group, a nine-year-old hotel company that has been on a roll recently. In a deal that closed Feburary 28, Sunray aquired the 240-room property with a full restaurant, lounge area, 8,000 square feet of meeting space, an indoor pool and fitness area. Kimwest was the previous owner of the building and it was managed by Westmont Hospitality. Sunray will now be both owner and manager.

Renovations are currently underway to breathe new life into a Leamington staple. A major upgrade is coming to the Pelee Motor Inn. Crews are hard at work, turning the nearly 40-year-old building into a Best Western Plus. ‘We really saw it as a diamond in the rough,’ says Shaun Gupta, spokesperson for Sunray Group. ‘It needed some tlc and we thought with our experience and back ground we could add that in and turn this place around.’ In total, Gupta says Sunray is investing $4-million to bring back new and old customers back to the hotel. ‘We’ve kept a foot print of the old hotel and gutted everything, carpeting, all brand new walls, bathoroms, new beds, bedding, towels,’ says general manager, Carolyn Tann-Jacobs. ‘There is nothing that hasn’t been changed. However, the pool and waterslide will remain as is. In the courtyard, the old pool has been filled-in and replaced with an indoor play gym. Tann-Jacobs says it’s a totally different feeling inside. ‘(It’s) nice to finally have someone who sees possibilities and willing to put capital company in for us.’ Gupta says despite recent closures in Leamington, including at the Heinz plant, the area can still support the hotel. ‘We’ve been hearing that in community lot of positive feedback. There is buzz here and we’re excited to see the outcome when we are all done.’ Construction is expected to wrap sometime in December and could create another 15 to 30 jobs.
